I want you to think about three massively popular songs for a moment: - Transparent Soul - Willow (released April 27 2021) - Brutal - Olivia Rodrigo (released May 21 3021) - Happier Than Ever - Billie Eilish (released July 30 2021) What do all of these have in common? Emo energy. Pop punk vibes. That's what is happening now, so get on it. That's what I'm here for today. I have the great pleasure of sharing with you fabulous jewels forged in the darkness of young women's minds. These songs had life breathed into them with vocals strained in divine feminine screams. Each bar beats with a heart of passion and pain. The energy fills the space it exists in and I love it. The satisfaction I feel to hear the girlis yelling is unparalleled. Metal songs are so often popularized by dudes shouting and grunting and being dark. That's cool and I respect the craft. But when women do things their way, that HITS. DIFFERENT. IT'S TERRIFYING AND I. LOVE. IT. Let me tell you why it hits different: the screaming the women are sharing is an expression of feminine and human pain that too often gets repressed. By simply sharing their anger and "negative" feelings, these artists go against the expectation that women should be soft squishy pillows to comfort everyone else at the expense of their own comfort and not hurt feelings. Instead of bottling their feelings to avoid sharing the discomfort, the girlis are letting it out. The girlis are going HARD. There is an EDGE to them, and I love to see it. I have been wondering for about a year now and thinking to myself: "WHERE ARE THE WOMEN SCREAMING IN MUSIC? WHY AM I NOT HEARING THE GIRLIS SHOUTING INTO A MICROPHONE IN BEAUTIFUL CACOPHONY??" I have been yearning for it and been unable to satiate this growing desire. It's been an emo itch I have had yet to scratch - until now. In the beginning of this month, I did a deep dive into artists that lead me to other artists who also do guttural yelling of dark feminine energy. This musical adventure did NOT disappoint. After much exploring, I created a playlist nearly 6 hours long, 100+ songs, and learned about so many new artists in the process. I wanted to share some favorites and just people who have impressed me entirely. Warning: it is a bit dark, so please take that into consideration. Introducing some favorite emo girlis of the year thus far: Rubies - Elliot Lee She has a lot of songs I really enjoy, even a cover of Dancing Queen that turned into an eerie, haunting song. Very good. Do You Like Me Now? - Dana Dentata This lady is so badass. I literally have 10 songs on my playlist from her. HIGHLY recommend. Scary good. Gaslight! - Maggie Lindemann ft. SiiickbrainMaggie is a bit more on the pop side and I love it. She has a great look and is quite spooky. Quality content. Overdrive - Siiickbrain I personally feel that Siiickbrain is the most hardcore, savage levels of terrifying. Her music? Intense. Energy? 100% Day I Die - DeathbyRomy DeathbyRomy is very cool and I like a lot of their other songs too!! I'm looking forward to hearing more from them. Maggots - Ashnikko This gal has been a top favorite of mine for a long time. This song is a banger even from last year. She is solid every time. Generally, I think this upsurge in emo gal music has a lot of contributing societal factors. My thought is somewhat due to young people growing up through the pandemic, the seeming doom of the human race as the climate crisis declines, the extreme political divide in the US, nobody can afford to live, etc. Overall, it's a bleak outlook. And people can't even hang out with their friends or family as a distraction because you will kill them or they could kill you (because of a virus). Then, if you are considering dating, you likely do a risk assessment of someone's germiness if they have the big sicky virus or are going to give it to you later on (at least I do). Of course, one person has no control over any one of these factors and that's why the young people of this world have *anxiety* (over-simplified version). It's all very stressful and hopeless feeling. There definitely were a lot of factors before the pandemic that could've led to popularizing emo girl music as well, but the trash-compactor levels of pressure during this time is a lot for many reasons. I think growing up living life online is enough to turn anyone into a depressed, anxiously stressed mess. I feel quite thrilled to be starting out 2022 with this musical energy as the background music to my day-to-day activities. It's quite motivating for me personally, like I am thee baddest girl around and no body can stop me. I highly recommend. Hopefully this year more artists will release music like this. That would be superb and I look forward to it. Thanks for hanging out. I hope the songs above didn't scare you too much. Here is the cover of Dancing Queen (ABBA) by Elliot Lee to calm the nerves. Behold a photo of me practicing skateboarding into 2022 on my little pennyboard. It fits the vibe.
We're all just skating through trying to make the best of it.

Recently, I decided to entertain astrology and make a playlist for all 12 signs. It was a fun exercise and challenge to look for music associated with each sign that fit the vibe. There's something in there for everyone! I've been told it has a slightly futuristic vibe to it. I like sharing music from YouTube because artists put a lot of effort into their music videos, and fun it is to find out a song you've been listening to and loving has an interesting music video! I included ones that I liked. It's like finding a little gold nugget. I love it. Sometimes, I've found it adds a story line or more context to a song, like an "ah-ha" moment. Even more depth!! I created a YEDHEADS Spotify account to share playlists easier if anyone is interested in checking it out. I will keep developing this a little further for later. This way, it's not on my personal account, and I can put other fun stuff on there too. Here is the Spotify link to the Astrology playlist I made! :) If this doesn't work, copy/paste link below: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2agRu69TIEJkMX2GD3IkHS?si=3_9dNxoHQvKPlh-H7HJxzw&utm_source=copy-link My general sign favorites are the first few in the playlist below : Signs - Dua Saleh, Star Signs - Odunsi, Zodiac - Headie One, Signs - Beyonce The songs that are specific zodiac favorites and those that inspired me to make this playlist are : Virgo Tendencies - Keke Palmer, Water Sign - Spider, and Scorpio - Moneybagg Yo Please enjoy the music selections!!
Virgo - Bratty
Goat Head - Earthgang Remix - Brittany Howard, Earthgang
Fun Facts: It looks like astrology originated in Mesopotamia then the Greeks went full throttle on it (according to this).
Did you know you have multiple signs (sun sign, moon sign, rising sign)? This Bustle article differentiates the big three. I picked songs I felt loosely went with the vibe of the sign, just based off of what I know (which is very little). I am not a dedicated astrology gal but recently I have learned a bit more about it. This playlist/project was the result of that. My thought for each sign in a sentence was:
I wanted to finish off the playlist by saying No Matter What Sign You Are, no matter your Readings In Astrology, you decide how you want to be. The stars are going to keep shining, the moon is going to keep turning, and you are still you. I do create a specific layout for how everything is organized on a laptop, so if looking on mobile, it will look a little different than how I set it up. It makes everything into a long list which is different than how I set it up on my end. Regardless, I hope you found something fun and new to listen to! |
